Summary of Position
The International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT) has an immediate opening for a highly committed, self-motivated person to join us as a full-time Associate Researcher. The position is located in the CBD area of Beijing, China and will work with US-based program team to support our efforts towards vehicle efficiency, emissions, and electrification policies in China.
Responsibilities
Overall: Support research projects on emerging issues with electric vehicle technologies and policies. Research topics may include technological trends of electric vehicles in China and globally, real-world performance, regulatory test protocol, performance regulation and incentive policy design of electric vehicles.
  • Collect, compile, and clean up datasets of electric vehicle technologies in China and globally, and maintain database.
  • Conduct vehicle technology trends analysis, and other statistical and spatial analysis of electric vehicle data.
  • Survey central and local policies relevant with developing, deploying electric vehicles.
  • Support to write technical reports, policy briefings, and articles to summarize ICCTs research for key stakeholders.
  • Support to develop outreach materials such as info-graphs and blogs.
  • Facilitate communication and support to develop new relations with stakeholders (industry, policy makers etc.).
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese, strong ability in spoken and written English is required.
  • M.S. in engineering, environmental science or policies, economics or statistics, or related disciplines, or Bachelor of Science degree with 1-2 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Excellent and demonstrated quantitative, analytical, and programming skills with Advanced Excel, Python/R/Matlab, ArcGIS are required.
  • Experience with electric vehicle technologies and policies highly desired.
  • Demonstrated interest in vehicle technology, climate change, air quality, energy, environment, public health, or related topics; familiarity with environmental and energy challenges in the transportation sector preferred.

Summary of Position

Responsibilities
Overview: Analyze information and collect data on efficiency, CO2 and air pollutant emissions reduction technologies and operation strategies to improve the environmental performance of the road freight sector, and to further develop methodologies to assess emissions reductions from the different alternatives. Ultimately, provide accurate information and advise government and industry on how to advance green freight programs to mitigate emissions and reduce costs.
  • Research, collect, compile, and analyze heavy commercial vehicle and freight data from China.
  • Use vehicle system simulation models to assess potential for energy savings and GHG emissions reductions from heavy-duty vehicles at system or component level.
  • Develop models for estimating the costs and benefits of heavy commercial vehicle and freight emission reduction technologies and strategies.
  • Write clear, strong technical reports, policy briefings, and articles to summarize ICCTs research for key stakeholders.
  • Develop outreach materials and present technical work to policy stakeholders.
  • Where appropriate, manage and review the work products of consultants to the ICCT on issues related to clean freight and logistics in China.
  • Other tasks deemed appropriate and relevant to this position.

Qualifications
  • Proficiency in spoken and written Mandarin Chinese, excellent command of spoken and written English is required.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in mechanical, civil, environmental, transportation engineering, environmental science, or related disciplines, or Bachelor of Science degree with 3-4 years of relevant work experience is required.
  • Advanced data analysis skills with Advanced Excel, MATLAB/Simulink, R/Python are required; familiarity with Autonomie, GEM or VECTO is preferred.
  • Highly organized, self-directed, and strategic in problem solving and identifying policy needs is highly desired.
  • Vehicle emission inventory modeling experience is preferred.
  • Experience with vehicle calibration engineering, multi-modal transportation planning, logistics vehicle operations and supply chain management, vehicle emission and efficiency policies are preferred.
